CDSCO Updates Medical Device Import Rules

New Delhi — The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization issued a notification on July 10, 2026, updating procedures for importing medical devices into India.

The changes apply mainly to Class A and Class B devices and introduce a revised document checklist along with faster scrutiny timelines.

Importers can now submit applications through an upgraded online portal integrated with the single window clearance system.

Background

India regulates medical device imports under the Medical Devices Rules, 2017, administered by CDSCO under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Imported devices require registration and import licenses before they can be sold in the Indian market. Lower-risk devices have historically faced lengthy documentation requirements.

The government has been working to streamline these processes to improve access to medical technology while maintaining safety standards.

Key developments

The July 10 notification reduces the number of documents required for Class A and Class B device import applications.

CDSCO has set a target scrutiny period of 30 days for complete applications, down from the previous 45–60 day timeframe in many cases.

Applicants must now use the updated online portal, which includes real-time status tracking and integration with customs systems.

Impact

The updated rules are expected to lower compliance costs and reduce delays for importers of commonly used devices such as diagnostic kits, surgical instruments, and monitoring equipment.

Hospitals and healthcare providers may see improved availability of newer medical technologies in the coming months.

Smaller importers and startups in the medtech sector stand to benefit the most from the simplified process.

What next

CDSCO will conduct industry workshops in August 2026 to clarify the new requirements and address implementation questions.

Further notifications are expected later this year to cover select Class C devices and refine risk-based assessment criteria.

Importers are advised to review the updated checklist on the CDSCO website before submitting fresh applications.
